Why We Worry
Scholars say that it is impossible to be anxious if we are thinking about what is going on right now, in the present. They say that anxiety comes from thoughts about the past and the future. Anxiety is a healthy response to perceived danger about the future (and the past because it influences the future). When we worry or become anxious, we try and figure out ways to keep danger away or how to prepare for the worst. Anxiety is healthy when it prepares us for danger. However, it is not healthy when the dangers we anticipate are a figment of our imagination. Or when the worry and anxiety reache a level that it is not longer problem solving. For example, if I am worrying and anxious about the fact … Read entire article »

Say “YES” to Pain!
WRONG: The best remedy for getting over a painful experience is to ignore it or to do something that will get your mind off of it. If you are partaking in this type of behavior, you are involved in “experiential avoidance” and that is not healthy according to some researchers. People who avoid their feelings tend to engage in substance abuse, impulsive risky behavior, emotional eating, and/or many other types of addictions. People who want to get away from their negative feelings end up having panic, anxiety or depressive attacks. It would seem that avoiding negative feelings would ease anxiety and depression. It does not. It makes them worse. Judge for yourself whether it is better to say “yes” or “no” to negative feelings and thoughts. There are various things you can … Read entire article »

EVERY DAY STRESS WILL INTERFERE WITH SEXUAL ACTIVITY
A recent study in the Journal of Family Psychology found that daily external stressors will influence the amount of sex you have. Previous studies have identified a connection between overall stress and sexuality, but this is the first study to investigate daily stressors and their impact on sexuality. This study reported that people have more sex on the weekends than on weekdays because daily stressors are diminished (not news to many of us!). And if you think that you have excellent coping skills or that your partnership is strong enough to evade the stessors, think again: It doesn’t matter how extensive or developed your coping skills are in diverting stress. Daily stressors will impact the frequency of sex regardless. But don’t despair, there is good news! The study … Read entire article »
A Stress Diary: Understand the Stress in Your Life
Stress Diary I’m a big fan of journaling because it soothes painful thoughts and emotions. Thoughts are expanded upon and reframed through journaling and feelings are expressed. If you are feeling really stressed out try starting a stress diary. If nothing else it will give you self-understanding and validation. 1. Assess Your Stressors Write down each stressful event What was the source of the stress? What was your initial reaction? How did your body respond? How did your mind respond? 2. Assess Your Coping Response What was the stressor? How did the stressor affect you? Was it threatening? Did you feel you could cope with it? What were your external resources to meet the challenge What were your internal resources to meet the challenge: Exactly how did you cope? What was the plan of action? What were the effects of your … Read entire article »
Stress And The Immune System
Studies have shown that stress debilitates the immune system. Researchers report that hormones (e.g. cortisol) that weaken the immune system are produced during stressful experiences. Worse yet, if your stress levels remain high over a long period of time, you may be prone to some pretty serious physical and emotional illnesses (cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, chronic pain, anxiety, depression, panic). The good news is that the amount of damage stress can impart depends on the response or coping skills that an individual uses when stressed. In other words, it’s not the stress that you experience that is damaging, but the way you handle it. Your ability to relax in the midst of stressful situations is important in determining how stress will impact your immune system. Mood also moderates the influence … Read entire article »
Stress Management Exercises Can Be Bad For You
Most articles on stress management prescribe meditation, relaxation exercises, organizing time and surroundings, decreasing consumption of drugs, exercise, and humor as stress relievers. The reality is that the list should be much longer than this. The point is not what you do, but whether you enjoy what you are doing. In other words, it is the enjoyment or pleasure in an activity that decreases stress and not the activity in itself. The danger in remaining within the confines of ten possible stress reducing activities is that it can set some people up for failure. If an individual does not enjoy meditative practices or relaxation exercises they are limited in finding stress reducing activities in the literature. For example, most writers, scholars, and researchers say that it is … Read entire article »
